On Sunday, October 23rd, I’m heading out for a mother/daughter date to The West Coast Women’s show at The Tradex in Abbotsford.
Last year my middle daughter and I attended the show. We left with bags full of items from the variety of vendors, full tummies from tasting so much delicious food, and saw some speakers on the main stage.
This year, I’m especially excited to bring my teenage daughter to see Kathleen Baty on the main stage.
Kathleen is the founder of a company called Safety Chick Enterprises. She will be hosting a seminar for moms and daughters called Street Smarts 101. In this 60-minute mother/daughter seminar, she will be discussing the smart way to handle age-appropriate safety issues.
I can’t wait to explore this topic with my 14-year-old daughter. I allow her the independence to walk to school alone. She has taken the bus and Skytrain out with her friends too. However, I haven’t really talked to her about things she can do in situations that may not be safe. I guess, I hate thinking of the worst, so I always assume she will be fine if she’s with a group or on a short 5-minute walk to school.
The thing is, if anything was to ever happen, I would regret for the rest of my life, that I didn’t somehow educate her further on how to handle uncomfortable, or heaven forbid unsafe, situations.
- 1 in 4 North American women will be sexually assaulted during their lifetime
- 11% of women have physical injury resulting for sexual assault
- Only 2 – 4% of all sexual assaults reported are false reports
- 60% of sexual abuse/assault victims are under the age of 17
- over 80% of sex crime victims are women
- 80% of sexual assault incidents occur in the home
- 83% of disabled women will be sexual assaulted during their lifetime
- 15% of sexual assault victims are boys under 16
- 1/5th of all sexual assaults involve a weapon of some sort -(www.sexassault.ca)
These stats are very scary. For this reason, I’m grateful Kathleen will be sharing her knowledge on this extremely important topic at the West Coast Women’s show.
I know this seminar will spark a hard conversation with my daughter, but I know it’s one we need to have.
